Inspiration
As students living in a pandemic, we know how hard it is to make friends with new people as classes are online. There are some other products in the market that students already use for example discord, but we thought people in discord join these groups to ask for help in assignments and course content. A majority of the people in discord never say a word at all. They are just bystanders. We wanted to build a platform where people felt safe and comfortable to meet different kinds of people from their classes.
What it does
NewMates is a social chat web application that lets students find friends based on the classes they are taking. Each user is given a bio where they can state their year, courses and interests. When a person wants to join a group, they can see the interests of their classmates and the classmates in the group. Then, they can decide to join the group and ultimately connect with their peers.
How we built it
Front-end: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, React.
Back-end: Firebase database, Firestore, React.
Challenges we ran into
Getting and posting information from/to the database.
Getting the design right and the right design -> aligning elements and making the way we wanted it to.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This hackathon was the first for most of us and we are so proud to have been able to develop a good-looking and functioning prototype. We enjoyed working with each other and we are happy how we divided ourselves into our tasks with ease.
What we learned
We learned how to use firebase, React and lots of other new technologies. We also learned how to make a full-stack web application. We also learnt how to work with each other in this project and it was very fun! :D
What's next for NewMates
We hope to continue making this application more functionable like adding recommendations for friends based on the user, getting MVP points for engaging in groups and adding an option for people to stream their games and their day-to-day life.
