Choosing where to live is a big decision, but useful neighbourhood information is scattered across data portals, council maps and property sites. I wanted to bring that context together without building another listings or property-price product.

New Zealand Suburb Scout is a free map for exploring and comparing places. It brings together official Census, rent, school and reported-crime data with suburb profiles, source links, dates and confidence notes. People can adjust the importance of supported factors to find areas that fit their priorities. The nationwide map is live, while data coverage varies by metric.

The hardest part has been joining datasets that use different boundaries, definitions and publication dates. I built a Python geospatial pipeline to normalize and validate the data, then precompute map tiles and serve the site with Astro, MapLibre and Cloudflare. The work reinforced an important rule: a missing figure is not zero, and the absence of a hazard map is not evidence that a place is safe. Every published number should be traceable to its source, date and method.
