Inspiration
We were inspired to make this hack to help start off the new year in the best way possible, and what better way to start off on the right foot than to relax with a game, think with a trivia quiz, make resolutions for the new year, and connect with others? We survived 2020 and we hope for positive things in 2021 and, thus, we want to spread the best of wishes to our loved ones. This hack will make it easier for people to send love to those near and dear to them.
(The games are simply affirmations of a resolution for self-love. By dressing up the character, we are really dressing up ourselves. :D)
What It Does
This project gives users the option to sends personalized season's greetings through email via a hosted website, as well as play a trivia quiz, generate a new year's resolution, or play a dress-up game in which they are able to drag different pieces of clothes to form a new outfit for their chosen character, both to send love to others and to send love to one's self. The game is hosted on the GoDaddy domain, and has both dark and light mode enabled. It is also mobile-friendly, and easy-to-use.
How We Built It
We built this project using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the website. The game was made using the G-Develop engine, with art assets made in piskelApp.
Challenges We Ran Into
Our main challenges started with having enough card designs to use for a greeting generator, which was readily fixed. Following that, we worried over the game's functionality, and went for a minimum viable product to ensure we had a working prototype and series of characters and items to include on the hosting website we also needed to make. Throw in a new year's trivia, a new year's resolution generator, and more, and we've made a fairly large project in a very short amount of time.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We're proud to have created a personalized season's greetings card generator and new year's resolution generator, to keep in line with the theme of the hackathon. Similarly, we are proud to have worked with an entirely new engine for our team, the G-Develop 5, to help make a drag-and-drop dress-up game. This hack was more cohesive because all of us were new to different aspects of the hack, but we all managed to pick up several things (including throwing in our own art assets!) to help make our hack as unique as possible.
Further functionality of New Year, New Us will later be implemented through the Radar.io API and creating cross-compatibility with different social media platforms, which will help locate where users of the hack are located geographically and allow for a more personal touch.
What We Learned
We learned how to work in different time zones with different roles and aspects of the project. Together, we compiled the bits and pieces into a cohesive whole, and picked up new functionality in a coding language, the incorporation of a new API, and the introduction to a new game development engine, on the way.
What's Next for New Year, New Us
In the future, we plan to incorporate more styles of season's greetings, as well as expand on our cross-compatibility for sending said greetings to Facebook, as well. Additionally, we plan to expand our dress-up game to include more characters, more colors, more clothes, and more choices. We also plan to add Radar.io to the hack to improve geographic pinpointing of users for personalizing sent messages.
