What Is It?

New vs Old is a word recognition game where words appear one at a time and you must decide, have you seen this word before, or is it new?

The catch: words you've already seen will randomly resurface among fresh ones. As your word count grows, keeping track of what's "new" versus "seen" becomes increasingly difficult.

How long can you trust your own memory?

How to Play

  1. Read: A word appears on screen
  2. Decide: Tap New if it's the first time you're seeing it, or Seen if it appeared earlier
  3. Score: Every correct answer earns a point
  4. Don't Guess Wrong: One incorrect answer and game over instantly

A visible countdown keeps the pressure on.

Is this a Daily Game?

New vs Old is built as a daily challenge, a fresh game post is automatically created on the subreddit every day.

Here's why daily works for this game:

  • Fair competition: Every post generates a unique pool of 1000 words, so no one can memorize yesterday's set and reuse that knowledge
  • Community ritual: A new post every day gives players a reason to come back, check their rank, and try to beat each other
  • Live leaderboard: Watch yourself climb (or get overtaken) as other players compete on the same post
  • Fresh challenge, always: No two posts ever share the same word set or order, keeping the game unpredictable

Game Mechanics

Each daily post generates 1000 unique words (4–10 letters) seeded by the post itself, ensuring:

  • Ensures no two days ever share the same pool of words.
  • Replaying the same daily game gives you the same word pool, but in a different order
  • If you survive past 1000 words, the word pool cycles back.

The longer you survive, the more words your brain has to track.

Scoring System

Score = 1 point per correct answer

A score of 50 means you correctly identified 50 words in a row without a single mistake.
