NEW SHARK ISLAND: A Game Development Journey
Inspiration
The idea for NEW SHARK ISLAND came from blending unexpected survival mechanics with high-stakes chaos. The vision was to create an intense scenario where players must navigate the wreckage of a ship while dodging speeding cars and avoiding deadly sharks lurking in the surrounding waters. The mix of land and sea dangers keeps players on edge, ensuring every moment feels unpredictable.
What It Does
NEW SHARK ISLAND challenges players to think fast and react even faster. Stranded on a crumbling shipwreck, they must evade oncoming vehicles while strategically avoiding sharks circling below. Players use their environment to survive—jumping between wreckage, timing movements, and using their surroundings to outsmart the threats. The goal? Stay alive long enough to find safety.
How We Built It
- Level Design: Created a fragmented shipwreck that forces strategic movement and evasion.
- AI Systems: Developed aggressive shark behaviors and unpredictable car movement patterns.
- Physics & Movement: Tuned player controls to balance fluid movement with survival tension.
- Sound Design: Designed immersive audio featuring eerie water noises, distant crashes, and shark splashes.
- Dynamic Events: Implemented randomized shark attacks and varying car speeds to keep players alert.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Collision Precision: Making cars move realistically across the uneven wreckage without feeling broken.
- Shark AI Balance: Ensuring sharks remain threatening but don’t create an impossible experience.
- Environmental Obstacles: Keeping the shipwreck engaging yet navigable required fine-tuning.
- Player Control Tweaks: Adjusting movement responsiveness to allow quick reactions.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Successfully created a survival game where movement feels fluid yet challenging.
- Designed a dynamic AI system that keeps every round unpredictable.
- Integrated immersive soundscapes to amplify the tension and atmosphere.
- Balanced difficulty so players feel both the thrill and pressure of survival.
What We Learned
- Combining land and sea hazards can lead to deeply engaging gameplay.
- Sound design plays a crucial role in amplifying tension and immersion.
- AI behavior must be unpredictable enough to challenge players without feeling unfair.
- Refining movement physics takes multiple iterations to strike the right balance.
What's Next for NEW SHARK ISLAND
- Adding Multiplayer: Allowing players to compete or collaborate in survival challenges.
- New Escape Mechanics: Introducing tools or objects to help players navigate the wreckage.
- More Environmental Hazards: Expanding the wreck site with additional dangers and interactive elements.
- Adaptive AI Behavior: Making sharks and cars react more intelligently to player movements.
We’re excited about where this project is headed! 🚢🦈🚗
