Inspiration

We were inspired by the holding pattern that the Port of Los Angeles implemented due to container port congestion. Instead of forcing 100+ ships to wait at anchorage they could "get in line" out at sea and reduce CO2 emissions.

What it does

Our NEW-Q solution is a system that the Panama Maritime Authority could use to oversee the queuing process.

How we built it

We used data from the Ocean Data Platform via the Jupyter Interface, MPA map overlays and combined it in Figma to prototype what a solution could look it.

Challenges we ran into

Pulling and aggregating data from the ODP was more python-heavy than expected.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we could create a visual representation of an extremely feasible solution, backed up with conservative calculations based on a snapshot of CO2 emissions for January 2022.

What we learned

We need a little more time and support to build a fully functioning version where you could slice every month and vessel.

What's next for NEW-Q System for the Panama Canal

Discussions with the Panama Canal on how they would like to implement this.
