Inspiration
When it comes to choosing your dream job, one important factor, that may hold more weight for some than it does for others, is location. Everyone has their own specific reasons that magnetize them to specific locations. First off, to even be offered these lovely opportunities, we must be aware of them. The process of finding and knowing of immediate opportunities that are available to us can be very time consuming and not so straightforward. As an overwhelmed college student, how would you like to be presented opportunities you might have been unaware of? Especially those opportunities that are acquainted to you by affiliation, such as "Shell Hacks 2019".
What it does
New Grad Careers takes a systematic approach to career finding, by solving the issues of time loss during job search, and also assists in the heavy decision making during job selection. It does this by assembling the relevant positions and very importantly, displays them on a map. To showcase the concept, New Grad Careers took the set of employers that appeared or sponsored Shell Hacks and mapped out a few of their CS/IT opportunities.
How we built it
New Grad Careers was created and designed during "Shell Hacks 2019", but unfortunately it overslept and didn't make it to the submission party :( . Elwood used Google Maps API to generate the visual view, Joel used Bootstrap to build the web interface, Jonathan used Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to hold the data. Rnard was in charge of the making decisions, assembling the employers and opportunities, and jump starting the project's development environment, and we all utilized CentOS servers from the google cloud platform to host it.
Challenges we ran into
Several persistent of bugs in Javascript, setting up a development environment on the CentOS servers, getting DNS to work with our GCP IP and domain, and assembling our idea and figuring out what direction to take it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Innovating another dimension into to the career search by making it visual and in 2D.
What we learned
Javascript is a very weird language when it comes to functions, returning variables, and saving variables in memory.
What's next for New Grad Careers
We plan to make this innovation large scale by incorporating Indeed API to pull whatever careers are available based on employers or filters selected.
