Inspiration
I’ve always loved how simple party games can turn into unforgettable memories. But while AI was transforming film, music, and even complex game genres, I noticed something important: party games hadn’t evolved at all.
“Never Have I Ever” was still played the same way as always—repeated prompts, predictable rounds, and static experiences that slowly lost energy. I wanted to see what would happen if AI didn’t just generate content, but actually became the host of the game.
That idea became the foundation of Never Have I Ever: Spill It!
What it does
Never Have I Ever: Spill It! is an AI-driven reimagining of a classic party game.
Instead of reading from a fixed list, players interact with an AI host that:
Delivers questions and dares with a natural, sarcastic voice
Personalizes each prompt using player names and input
Adapts to the mood, pacing, and dynamic of the group
Keeps the experience energetic, playful, and unpredictable
Every session is dynamically generated, so no two games ever feel the same.
How we built it
I developed the game in Unity and integrated multiple AI technologies to shape the host’s personality and behavior:
Text generation models to create context-aware questions and dares in real time
ElevenLabs voice synthesis to narrate each line with expressive tone and sarcasm
A custom pipeline that flows from user input → AI output → voice playback, synchronized with UI, animations, and sound effects
The goal wasn’t just to “add AI,” but to make it feel like a genuine social presence guiding the game.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was maintaining smooth pacing while using AI models in real time.
Latency could break the rhythm of a round
Poor timing made narration feel disconnected
Weak or repetitive prompts reduced player engagement
We had to optimize generation speed, pre-load key processes, refine timing, and test with real groups of players to ensure the experience always felt responsive, natural, and fun.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created one of the first multimodal, AI-powered social party games, where:
Voice, text, UI, and player actions react to each other in real time
The AI host feels expressive and playful instead of robotic
Players often describe the experience as playing with a “chaotic friend,” not just an app
Watching people experience an AI-driven party host for the first time has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.
What we learned
We learned that transforming a simple game requires more than just AI-generated content—it requires building an AI personality.
Tone matters as much as text
Timing matters as much as latency
Personalization dramatically increases engagement and laughter
We also learned how critical it is to optimize for real-time responsiveness in a party setting, where even a short delay can disrupt the flow and energy of the group.
What's next for Never Have I Ever: Spill It!
Our next steps include:
Expanding AI personality modes (chaotic, sweet, bold, romantic, etc.)
Adding region-aware humor and cultural nuance
Implementing long-term memory so the AI can “recall” previous moments and bring them back later in the session
Our goal is for Never Have I Ever: Spill It! to become a global benchmark for AI-powered social games—a reference for how AI can enhance human interaction and create new kinds of shared experiences.
