Inspiration
Sigma cook: yap or cap? Nah, I’mma cap! When I browse social media, I often come across all kinds of brainrot trends—be it the Grimace Shake, Skibidi Sigma, or whatever’s trending next. I even use these terms with my friends, but sometimes there are just too many to remember. Honestly, it’s overwhelming.
On top of that, I tend to procrastinate a lot. Since I’m constantly using these buzzwords and feel like my browsing time needs some control, I thought of creating a tool that could monitor and manage my exposure to this ever-evolving digital lexicon.
What it does
- Tracking usage of viral internet slang in real-time
- Calculating an "aura score" based on slang usage patterns and time spent on socials.
- Providing gentle reminders to "Touch Grass" or be a "Chill Guy" after extended social media sessions
- Offering customizable time limits for social media browsing
- Suggest slangs when typing. Supporting dark/light themes for comfortable viewing
How we built it
Built using pure JavaScript, HTML and CSS:
- MutationObserver for dynamic content scanning
- Chrome Storage API for persistent data
- Custom regex patterns for slang detection
- CSS animations for smooth UI transitions
- Message passing between content scripts and popup
Challenges we ran into
- Handling dynamic content loading on social media platforms
- Balancing performance with real-time scanning
- Creating an engaging but non-intrusive UI
- Managing state across different browser contexts
- Detecting slang variations
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created an intuitive aura rating system
- Implemented smooth dark/white theme transitions
- Developed a flexible custom slang dictionary and time limit setting option
- Built responsive overlays with motivational messages
What we learned
- Browser API optimization
- State management across contexts
- Regular expression optimization
- UX design for browser extensions
What's next for Neurot
- Machine learning for better slang detection
- Customizable notification styles
- Time tracking analytics
