About the Project

Inspiration

What if your mind could control the speed of a car? This question sparked the idea for NeuroDash, a game where focus and mental clarity define victory. Inspired by advancements in EEG technology and the growing importance of mental health, we envisioned a platform that combines *neuroscience with multiplayer gaming, making brain training fun, competitive, and interactive.

What We Learned

  1. Neuroscience Meets Gaming:

    • How brainwave data (focus, noise) can influence gameplay mechanics.
    • Translating neuroscience metrics into real-time game controls.
  2. Technology & Collaboration:

    • EEG integration using SDKs like Muse and NeuroSky.
    • Working with cross-functional teams to bridge neuroscience, development, and design.
  3. Game Design Challenges:

    • Balancing gameplay between casual gamers and neuroscience enthusiasts.
    • Ensuring an engaging experience while keeping cognitive improvement at its core.

How We Built It

Game Engine

  • Developed in Unity for dynamic 3D track designs and real-time responsiveness.
  • Integrated physics-based mechanics for a natural racing feel.

EEG Integration

  • Used Muse EEG headsets to collect brainwave data.
  • Processed EEG inputs using Python and integrated them via Unity SDKs.
  • Metrics used:
    • Focus Level: Controls car speed.
    • Mental Noise: Affects steering precision.

Multiplayer System

  • Built using Photon Networking for low-latency online racing.
  • Supports up to 8 players per race, with real-time leaderboards.

Track Design

  • Tracks dynamically react to brain activity:
    • Sharp Turns appear during high noise.
    • Boost Pads activate for sustained focus.
  • Themes include:
    • Urban Rush: A cityscape with interactive traffic.
    • Mind Maze: A shifting, brainwave-reactive terrain.

Visual Feedback

  • In-game dashboards show focus and noise levels in real-time.
  • Audio cues and visual animations enhance engagement.
    ### Challenges We Faced
Challenge Solution Implemented
Signal Noise in EEG Data Used advanced filtering techniques to improve data accuracy.
Variable Focus Levels Calibrated gameplay for each user’s natural focus baseline.
Real-Time Responsiveness Optimized data pipelines to reduce lag between EEG input and in-game actions.
Accessibility Partnered with affordable EEG hardware providers for broader reach.

Key Features

  1. Focus-Based Speed:
Players with higher focus make their cars go faster.

  2. Noise-Based Steering:
Reduced mental distractions improve car control.

  3. Dynamic Power-Ups:
Unlock boosts, shields, or slow down opponents based on brainwave stability.

  4. Multiplayer Modes:
    Compete with friends in:

    • Classic Races
    • Battle Arenas
    • Focus Time Trials

Future Roadmap

  • Therapeutic Gaming:
Introduce ADHD-friendly modes to improve attention span.

  • Expanded Tracks:
Add procedurally generated terrains that adapt to each player’s cognitive profile.

  • Wearable Compatibility:
Support more EEG devices, like Emotiv and OpenBCI.

  • Global Tournaments:
Host online championships where players compete based on their mental prowess.
