Inspiration
This project was born out of personal struggles with anxiety, overthinking, and the invisible weight of mental exhaustion. As students, we often mask what we're going through, showing up to school with smiles, while internally battling spiraling thoughts, racing heartbeats, or complete mental fog. We realized that despite all the mental health apps out there, few actually listen, respond, and understand in real-time. That gap inspired NeuroBridge, a tool we wish we had when things felt overwhelming.
What it does
NeuroBridge is a full-stack web application that functions as a neurological safety net. It combines:
Voice analysis (to check for tone and fluency)
NLP-based text analysis (to detect disorganized thinking)
Cognitive coherence checks (using OpenAI)
Risk evaluation (low/medium/high cognitive disorientation)
Users can either speak or type their thoughts, and NeuroBridge will respond with real-time analysis, feedback, and visual insights. It also provides a dashboard of previous check-ins to help monitor stability over time
How we built it
Frontend: React (with Tailwind CSS) for a calming, mobile-friendly UI
Backend: Flask + OpenAI API for analysis and sentiment interpretation
Voice Tools: Web Audio API + transcription logic
Data Flow: RESTful API structure, JSON payloads between front and back
Deployment-Ready: Structured for platforms like Vercel or Render
Challenges we ran into
Learning to integrate multiple input types (voice + text) and manage them efficiently.
Designing prompts for OpenAI to return structured, useful, and medically appropriate responses.
Handling user privacy concerns and making the app feel safe and non-judgmental.
Testing and refining the tone of the AI assistant to feel empathetic, not robotic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the work that we were able to do in the short period of time.
What we learned
We learned that mental health technology must go beyond static checklists. It must listen, adapt, and respond. We explored how AI can support, not replace, empathy, and how simple tools like tone detection or guided journaling can make someone feel seen.
