About NeuralCart AI

The Inspiration

Shopping in supermarkets can be time-consuming, especially when customers have to manually search for products, manage their shopping lists, and wait at checkout counters. We wanted to explore how Artificial Intelligence could make this experience smarter, faster, and more convenient.

This inspired us to build NeuralCart AI — an AI-powered smart retail assistant that uses computer vision to recognize grocery products, manage a digital shopping cart, and provide nutritional information to customers.

Our goal is to bring together AI and retail technology to create a more intelligent shopping experience.

What We Built

NeuralCart AI is designed to recognize grocery products through a webcam-based scanning system. When a customer scans an item, the system identifies the product and displays its details. The customer can then choose to add it to the cart, adjust its quantity, or continue scanning other products.

The key features include:

  • AI-Based Product Recognition: Uses computer vision and a custom image classification approach to identify grocery products.
  • Smart Cart Management: Allows customers to add products, increase or decrease quantities, and view their cart.
  • Nutritional Information: Displays details such as calories, sugar, and carbohydrates.
  • Automated Billing: Calculates the cart subtotal, applicable tax, and final bill.
  • Interactive Web Interface: Provides a user-friendly dashboard for scanning products and managing the shopping experience.

How We Built It

We developed NeuralCart AI using a combination of Python, Artificial Intelligence, computer vision, and web technologies.

Our backend is built using FastAPI, which handles image uploads, product recognition requests, and cart operations. OpenCV and TensorFlow are used for image processing and the machine learning workflow.

The frontend is developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, providing a webcam interface, product information, cart management, and billing display.

We also explored grocery product datasets and custom image collection to support product recognition for categories such as Lays, Milk, Oreo, Coca-Cola, and Maggi.

Our development approach involved building the system step by step, integrating the backend with the frontend, and testing the complete scanning-to-checkout workflow.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was achieving reliable product recognition. Grocery packages often have similar colours, shapes, and designs, making it difficult to distinguish between products using generic image classification models.

We also faced challenges with:

  • Finding and preparing suitable product images for training.
  • Improving recognition under different lighting conditions and camera angles.
  • Connecting the frontend with the FastAPI backend.
  • Managing product quantities and maintaining accurate cart calculations.
  • Integrating multiple technologies into one working application.

These challenges helped us understand that building an AI-powered application involves much more than simply training a model. Data quality, model evaluation, backend integration, and user experience are equally important.

What We Learned

Working on NeuralCart AI helped us gain practical experience in computer vision, machine learning, API development, frontend-backend integration, and software debugging.

We learned how to process images, communicate between a web interface and a Python backend, manage application data, and approach real-world AI problems.

Most importantly, we learned to turn an idea into a working prototype through experimentation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

What's Next?

We aim to improve product recognition accuracy, expand the number of supported grocery products, and explore real-time multi-product detection.

We also plan to strengthen the checkout workflow and explore blockchain integration for transparent and secure transaction records.

NeuralCart AI is our step towards making everyday shopping smarter, more informative, and more convenient.
