Inspiration

The inspiration of making NeighbourHelp came form growing need among elders who are all by their selves and struggle to do daily activities. As the society is becoming increasingly digital, it is a need of an hour to provide a platform that connects needy people to people who want to volunteer to help.

What it does

It connects two stratas of society: the elderly people and the young people who are willing to be a part of social help.
Neighbour: It provides a platform for needy to put up a work they have and get assistance in it.
Volunteer: it provides platform to help people around them and in their locality with the daily routine tasks.
This website will help in fostering a sense of mutual community care.

How we built it

  1. Frontend: The app's frontend is built using Django templates and Bootstrap for a responsive, clean user interface.
  2. Backend: Django powers the backend, handling user authentication, request submission, and volunteer registration.
  3. Database: A relational database (SQLite or MySQL) stores the users' data, requests, and volunteer information.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Ensuring a seamless integration for elderly, making it easy for them to use with clear instructions.
  2. Creating an efficient system to match volunteers with elderly users based on factors like location, availability, and task requirements.
  3. Ensuring the app works across various devices—especially for elderly users who may access it from phones, tablets, and desktops—while maintaining a consistent experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Successfully created an app with an intuitive, user-friendly interface tailored for needy people, ensuring accessibility for those with limited technological experience.
  2. Developed a volunteer matching algorithm that pairs needy users with available volunteers based on proximity, task requirements, and availability, optimizing the process of finding help when needed most.
  3. Ensured the app’s design is fully responsive, making it easy to navigate on mobile devices, which is essential for elderly users who may prefer accessing the platform via smartphones or tablets.

What we learned

  1. Gained valuable experience in building user-centric applications, especially considering accessibility for older users.
  2. Learned about designing a robust system for volunteer management and request handling.
  3. Gained hands-on practice with django

What's next for Neighbour Help

  1. Making help trackable using google maps
  2. Developing a mobile application for it
