Inspiration

The BYUI career center has a plethora of resources for contacting and networking. With so many contacts and strategies, it's all hard to keep track of. Net Book seeks to fix this.

What it does

Net Book is a simple, easily navigated program to connect with industry leaders, learn about networking and record your progress

How we built it

Built on electron, this desktop app launches natively on Windows, MacOS and Linux using a combination of JavaScript, HTML, and more

Challenges we ran into

Electron JS turned out to be far more complicated than expected. Similarly, we chose to dynamically load our html content to include back and forward arrows. This choice added to further difficulties in loading the JS files that accompanied these pages. As a result, we had a lot more functionality that what we could show in the demo.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Itemized more than 37000 internships from the Career Center into a relational database. Made a cross-platform app with Electron JS. Graphic Design.

What we learned

How Javascript files are loaded and communicate. How to normalize large data sources for a database. How to embed maps in web views.

What's next for Net Book

Moving from Electron to Web Services would be the first step. From there, we could expand functionality to better filter, annotate, and add to the data in the database. Once more functionality is established, we would be interested in presenting this project to the school viable product.
