Inspiration

We wanted to bridge the gap between basic motion detection and meaningful situational awareness. Our goal was to create a tool that helps developers filter through Ring notifications using sophisticated AI models. This allows us to reduce notification fatigue for homeowners.

What it does

NestNotify monitors live and recorded streams from Ring devices to perform real-time object analysis. It uses machine learning models to distinguish between routine activities and potential security threats. The system ensures that users are only alerted when specific, relevant events occur in their home environment.

How we built it

We deployed our microservices architecture on amazon-eks to ensure high scalability for video processing. We used haystack for orchestration and amazon-sagemaker for training and deploying our computer vision models. The core logic was written in Python, integrating directly with amazon-ring to fetch event data.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled initially with low-latency processing of video frames within the amazon-eks cluster. Optimizing the data flow between haystack and SageMaker endpoints required significant tuning. We also faced challenges in mapping various Ring event types to our internal nestnotify event schema.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully integrating the Ring API with a complex AWS-native pipeline. We managed to achieve high accuracy in identifying specific objects within home environments. Our Python-based implementation is flexible enough for other developers to extend the logic.

What we learned

We learned a great deal about the complexities of handling streaming video data in a distributed environment. We gained deep experience in how to optimize SageMaker models for real-time inference tasks. Understanding the nuances of the Ring API helped us build a more robust notification system.

What's next for NestNotify

We plan to expand our library of recognized objects to include specific package delivery patterns. We also want to implement a more intuitive dashboard for developers to visualize security trends. Our ultimate goal is to make NestNotify the standard middleware for custom Ring security applications.
