Inspiration
My wife & I were asked to babysit for some family members while they parents went on an overseas trip for 7 days. 4 kids, 2 dogs, 12 fish & a lizard were quite the task to manage. Through the course of our stay, I found that my wife would know stuff I didn't know (school start times, bed times, feeding routines), and I would know stuff that my wife didn't (alarm codes, routines, etc). I thought that surely there could be an app where parents store all of this information to make sitters (nannies, grandparents, etc) lives' easier.
What it does
NestNote allows parents to record all of the details about their homes; places, entries, routines, calendar events, in the app to be easily shared or converted to a PDF.
How we built it
Fully built in Swift, utilizing Google's Firebase for auth, data storage, & cloud functions, backed by RevenueCat for subscriptions & purchases.
Challenges we ran into
Who doesn't run into a challenge when venturing into new territories? I know I did. Namely UX issues, hard-to-replicate bugs, confusing design patterns, & feature creep were all things that I went to battle with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall, I've built a tool that is loved by several parents, & I'm just getting started!
What we learned
I learned that I need to get user's involved earlier, to prevent having to backtrack once we've gone too far down a path that I foolishly thought the user wanted or needed. I also learned to leverage LLM coding models to help with typically challenging or repetitive tasks like converting SVGs to bezier paths, or complex collectionViews that only get setup once in a blue moon.
What's next for NestNote - Household Management
Talking to more users & learning how to grow is next on the agenda! Also having fun while doing it!
