Inspiration
The inspiration for Nest came from the increasing global issues of food waste and hunger. Every day, local restaurants throw away perfectly good food, while millions of people go hungry. We saw an opportunity to bridge this gap by redirecting surplus food from restaurants to those in need, making a difference in our communities. We believe we can save the world by reducing food waste, fighting hunger, and building stronger, more sustainable communities.
Category: Government
Nest addresses key social issues like food waste and hunger, which governments aim to reduce. By connecting restaurants with people in need, it helps improve food security and reduce waste. Nest works by partnering with local restaurants to redirect surplus food to communities in need and providing real-time shelter information. This supports government efforts to fight hunger, homelessness, and environmental impact.
What it does
Nest connects local restaurants with people in need of food and shelter. The app helps reduce food waste by redistributing surplus meals and provides real-time information on nearby shelters, all while ensuring users can navigate offline.
How we built it
We built Nest using a no-code platform, allowing us to rapidly prototype and deploy the app. Key features such as food pickup, shelter information, and offline navigation were integrated using available tools like Zapier for automating workflows and Google Maps API for location-based services. We also used Figma for designing the user interface and Canva for creating visuals. Our platform enables easy adoption by restaurants and users, keeping the process simple and efficient.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring real-time accuracy for food availability and shelter capacity. Maintaining reliable, up-to-date data in a fast-paced, real-world environment proved to be tricky. Additionally, we had to focus on scalability, making sure the app could grow beyond our initial testing areas and be easily expanded to new regions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a solution that addresses both food waste and hunger, while also providing vital shelter information. We are especially proud of creating a non-internet-based app that allows people with no internet access to view nearby places for food and shelter. Additionally, the ability to scale without needing extensive technical knowledge using no-code tools has set the foundation for future growth.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned the importance of collaboration, simplicity, and innovation. Working together as a team, we found creative ways to overcome obstacles, and we quickly understood the power of no-code solutions in bringing ideas to life rapidly. We also realized the critical role of real-time data in making our solution effective and impactful.
What's next for Nest: Eat Well. Waste Less. Help More.
We plan to expand Nest to more cities and partner with more restaurants and shelters. We aim to improve data accuracy, build stronger partnerships with local communities, and explore additional features like job opportunities for those in need and further sustainability initiatives. Our ultimate goal is to help reduce food waste, fight hunger, and create a stronger, more connected world.
