Inspiration NestEgg IRL was inspired by a simple but frustrating truth: most financial apps help after the money is already gone. For busy mums juggling families, work, and mental load, budgeting tools feel like homework — and investing apps feel intimidating or out of reach. Rebecca’s community consistently talks about wanting financial independence, but without spreadsheets, jargon, or guilt. We wanted to build something that felt calm, practical, and encouraging — an app that shows how small, everyday choices can quietly compound into long-term security. What it does NestEgg IRL is a money-confidence app that helps users make smarter financial decisions before they spend. The app allows users to: Preview the true cost of everyday purchases over time See simple savings swaps and alternatives Use a money-first batch cooking planner to reduce food costs Visualize how small savings could grow if invested Learn investing basics through short, approachable micro-lessons Rather than tracking every transaction, NestEgg IRL focuses on real-life moments where better decisions actually happen. How we built it NestEgg IRL was built as a TestFlight-ready iOS app using: SwiftUI with an MVVM architecture Lightweight data persistence for user state RevenueCat SDK for subscriptions and entitlement management Simple compound-growth modeling for long-term projections We focused on shipping a real, monetizable MVP with clear user flows from onboarding to value to paywall, rather than over-engineering features. Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was resisting the urge to turn NestEgg IRL into a traditional budgeting or investing app. It required constant restraint to keep the experience simple, supportive, and non-judgmental. Another challenge was balancing financial clarity with regulatory safety — making sure insights were educational and empowering without crossing into financial advice. Finally, designing monetization that felt aligned with trust, not pressure, took several iterations. Accomplishments that we’re proud of Shipping a fully functional iOS MVP within the hackathon timeline Successfully integrating RevenueCat for subscriptions Creating a finance app that feels calm and encouraging, not stressful Designing an experience built specifically for a real influencer audience Maintaining a clear path from MVP to a long-term, profitable product What we learned We learned that finance tools don’t need more data — they need better timing. Helping users before a decision is made is far more powerful than tracking mistakes after the fact. We also learned that tone matters as much as features. Trust, encouragement, and clarity drive engagement more than complex dashboards. Finally, building for a specific audience unlocked much stronger product decisions than trying to appeal to everyone.
