🇳🇵 Nep Chat — A Messaging App Made for Nepal
Inspiration
Nep Chat was inspired by the idea of building a modern messaging platform that brings people closer together while celebrating Nepal's identity, culture, and languages. We wanted to create a platform where Nepali users could communicate easily, share their moments, and stay connected with friends, family, and communities across Nepal and around the world.
Our vision is to build a homegrown digital communication platform that combines modern technology with Nepali culture and creates new opportunities for Nepal's digital future.
What it does
Nep Chat is a messaging app concept designed to make communication simple, modern, and accessible. Our planned features include:
- Personal Messaging: Chat with friends and family in real time.
- Voice Messages: Send and listen to voice notes with waveform playback.
- Media Sharing: Share photos, videos, documents, and audio files.
- Groups and Communities: Bring people together around shared interests.
- Nepali Festival Stickers: Celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Teej, Chhath, and Nepali New Year with cultural stickers.
- Nep AI Reply: Help users generate replies in Nepali, English, and Romanized Nepali.
- Stories: Share photos, videos, and text updates that disappear after 24 hours.
- Voice and Video Calls: Connect with people beyond text messages.
- Privacy-Focused Communication: Make user privacy and secure communication important priorities.
Our goal is to create a user-friendly messaging experience that understands the needs of Nepali users.
How we built it
Nep Chat is being developed with a focus on modern UI/UX, responsive design, and a scalable architecture. Our development approach explores web technologies for the interface and backend services for user authentication, messaging, media storage, and real-time communication.
We are also exploring AI-powered features, language support, and tools that can make communication more convenient for Nepali users.
The project is being designed with a mobile-first approach so that users can enjoy a smooth experience across smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Challenges we ran into
Building a messaging platform comes with several challenges. Some of the main challenges include:
- Designing a clean, modern, and easy-to-use interface.
- Planning reliable real-time message delivery.
- Managing media uploads and file sharing.
- Choosing suitable backend services and APIs.
- Planning privacy, authentication, and account security.
- Supporting Nepali, English, and Romanized Nepali.
- Balancing ambitious features with available development resources.
These challenges have helped us identify what needs to be improved and prioritized as development continues.

Our accomplishments include developing the concept, defining a feature roadmap, exploring the user experience, and planning distinctive features such as Nepali festival stickers and Nep AI Reply.
We are especially proud of the ambition behind Nep Chat: creating something that can represent Nepali innovation while making communication more accessible and enjoyable.
What we learned
Through Nep Chat, we learned that building a messaging app involves much more than designing chat screens. Reliable backend systems, real-time communication, data security, responsive interfaces, and thoughtful user experience are all essential.
We also learned the importance of prioritizing core features before expanding into advanced capabilities such as AI replies, stories, and video calls.
Most importantly, we learned that local languages and cultural identity can help make technology more meaningful to the people who use it.
What's next for Nep Chat
Our next goal is to continue developing and testing Nep Chat, beginning with its essential messaging features and gradually expanding the platform.
Our future roadmap includes:
