Inspiration
With the arrival of the Year of the Snake, we immediately thought of the classic game, especially after seeing the game on Google Doodles. However, we wanted to add a new aspect to the game that would fundamentally change its game style and mechanics.
What it does
In this upgraded and updated version of Snake, the game now features 2 players who can play live against each other. The two snakes compete with each other to collect red apples and different powerups. The first snake to reach 500 points wins, while crashing into the other snake causes you to lose.
How we built it
First, we built the minimum viable product to establish the basic game requirements and mechanics, such as moving and collecting. Then, we updated the aesthetics of the game, such as particle effects when collecting items and the main menu screen, by co-writing with generative AI to ensure the visuals were compelling and attractive and magnificent and unbelievable and amazing and stupendous and exquisite and demure.
Challenges we ran into
When the game ended either from points or from collisions with other snakes, the game would not stop even after the results screen appeared. Therefore, we had to create a game pause function, adjusting game states so that the game had replayability regardless of whether the "Play Again" button was pressed or the user navigated to the home screen and then clicked "Play."
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were very happy with the color scheme, as it resembles the text style and colors associated with arcades. Similarly, the particle effects bring life to the game, making it more dynamic and animated. Finally, the introduction of power-ups was something we were very proud of, since they each required different functionalities but all increased snake speed.
What we learned
During the project, we gained significant experience with the Hackathon process, given that this was our first. Working with JavaScript, CSS, and HTML helped us better understand how these languages interact in a project, as well as how to A/B testing when improving our MVP.
What's next for Neon Snake Duel
With more time, we would love to make more types of boards available to more numbers of players (such as 4-player mode). Adding walls, portals, or other similar mechanics would further add depth and keep the game fun for the players. We look forward to further updating our game with these goals in mind!
