I wanted to see if a fully-featured, polished puzzle game could run completely offline and without any external libraries. The challenge was to build a single-file HTML5 game that feels like a native mobile app.
What it does
NEON MATCH is a neon-themed memory matching game. Players tap cards to flip them and find matching symbols. It features 20 handcrafted levels, a 3-star scoring system, real-time generated sound effects, haptic vibration, and works completely offline. It can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA) or a native Android APK.
How we built it
Built entirely from scratch using vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (ES6).
- No frameworks (No React, Vue, etc.)
- No external libraries (No jQuery, Phaser, etc.)
- No build tools (No npm, Webpack, etc.)
- Canvas API for rendering the neon grid and card animations.
- Web Audio API for generating sound effects in real-time (zero audio files).
- Service Worker and Web Manifest for PWA installability and offline caching.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a performant, installable app without any build tools was the biggest challenge. Ensuring the game ran smoothly on low-end Android devices required careful optimization of the Canvas rendering and JavaScript logic. Packaging it into a signed APK using PWABuilder without a traditional Android Studio setup was also a unique hurdle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully building a game that weighs almost nothing, loads instantly, and works entirely offline. Creating a signed APK that installs perfectly on Android, complete with a custom app icon and splash screen. Building a fully functional game in a single HTML file.
What we learned
Constraints breed creativity. Working without libraries forces you to understand the fundamentals of JavaScript and the Browser APIs. We learned how to leverage PWABuilder to turn a web app into a native Android app. We also learned the importance of optimizing performance for mobile devices.
What's next for NEON MATCH
Adding daily challenges and more game modes. We also plan to publish the app on the Amazon Appstore to reach a wider audience of mobile gamers.
