Inspiration

As an Android engineer and analog photography enthusiast, I noticed a frustrating gap in mobile photography:

While iOS has long enjoyed a thriving ecosystem of boutique film camera apps, Android users have largely been left behind. Stock camera apps on modern smartphones keep pushing aggressive AI skin smoothing, synthetic HDR, and hyper-saturated processing that strips all the soul, warmth, and imperfection out of photos.

I wanted the nostalgic, tactile feeling of walking around with a classic 35mm point-and-shoot camera—the kind where you savor the click of the shutter and appreciate the natural colors of real film stocks. So I locked in to build NeoFilm: an authentic analog film camera experience crafted natively for Android.

What it does

NeoFilm transforms your Android smartphone into a classic 35mm film rangefinder:

• Authentic Film Color Science: Custom mathematical tone curves, film grain matrices, and skin-tone rendering engines inspired by legendary 35mm negative stocks (Kodak Portra, Fuji Superia, and classic B&W emulsions)—not cheap Instagram tint filters. • Tactile Skeuomorphism: Authentic mechanical shutter sounds, physical haptic feedback clicks, and a retro LCD frame counter that make shooting feel physical again. • Shareable Recipe QR Codes: Just like Fujifilm camera communities, users can dial in custom film recipes and share or import them instantly via QR code. • Darkroom Studio & Contact Sheets: Automatically render developed photos into printable 35mm film strips and darkroom contact sheets with customizable frame borders. • Pro Manual Controls: Live histogram, manual ISO/exposure compensation, grid overlays, and aspect ratio switching.

How we built it

NeoFilm is built 100% natively from scratch using modern Android architecture:

• UI & UX: Built entirely in Jetpack Compose with Material 3 and custom skeuomorphic components. • Camera Pipeline: Powered by CameraX with custom image analysis and post-processing pipelines for real-time tone mapping. • Architecture: Clean MVVM architecture with Kotlin Coroutines, StateFlow, and Dagger Hilt for dependency injection. • Monetization & In-App Purchases: Integrated seamlessly with RevenueCat and Google Play Billing for localized regional pricing and free trial subscriptions. • Monitoring & Stability: Firebase Crashlytics to ensure robust performance across diverse Android hardware.

Challenges we ran into

• Android Hardware Fragmentation: The Android ecosystem has thousands of sensor configurations. Ensuring consistent exposure compensation, aspect ratio crops, and zero-latency shutter actuation across Pixel, Samsung, and Xiaomi devices required meticulous CameraX lifecycle tuning. • Real-Time Color Science & Performance: Emulating film color response curves and dynamic film grain without causing viewfinder lag or overheating the device required optimizing image buffer processing. • Tactile Haptic Timing: Fine-tuning the micro-timing between the shutter button press, the haptic vibration motor, and the mechanical audio sample to make the camera feel physically satisfying.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Built and shipped a production-grade native camera app as a solo indie developer. • Created a custom Film Recipe QR system that bridges digital mobile convenience with analog customization. • Released on Google Play and successfully launched on the global Product Hunt leaderboard. • Maintained a smooth 60fps native Compose UI while processing high-resolution images.

What we learned

• Deep insights into CameraX sensor pipelines, color transformation matrices, and device-specific camera quirks. • How much small details matter—tactile haptics and authentic mechanical sounds transform a boring camera app into a tool people genuinely love holding. • The power of building in public, listening to early user feedback, and testing regional pricing for emerging markets.

What's next for NeoFilm - Pro Film Camera

• Community Film Recipe Hub: An in-app marketplace to discover and preview recipes created by photographers worldwide. • Additional Vintage Film Emulsions: Expanding the film library with rare experimental and cinematic stocks. • Lock-Screen & Home Screen Widgets: Instant one-tap film shooting straight from the lock screen. • Advanced RAW capture and multi-frame tone development.
