NELO AI – Your Ambient, Role-Aware AI Companion

Inspiration

The idea behind NELO AI was sparked by a simple yet powerful desire: to have an intelligent assistant that doesn't just wait for commands — but actively supports how you work and live. We were inspired by platforms like Notion and operating systems like macOS, but we wanted to create something more alive, something that listens, adapts, speaks, remembers, and even understands your mood.

In a fast-paced digital world, most productivity tools are static and passive. NELO was born from a vision of an AI-first workspace — where your voice controls your tools, and your role shapes your experience.

What it does

NELO AI is an intelligent SaaS platform that functions as your second brain, built around an AI assistant that adapts to your professional role. It combines ambient voice interaction, emotional awareness, and productivity tools to help you stay organized and efficient.

🎧 Voice-first assistant: Interact with NELO using Bluetooth earpiece or mic
🧠 Role-adaptive dashboards: Layout and tools change based on your role (e.g., Student, HR, Banker)
✍️ Smart note-taking with AI summarization
📅 Calendar and task manager with AI optimization
🔗 Memory vault: Remembers conversations and context

NELO is designed to act like a friendly, emotionally intelligent companion embedded into a modular workspace — as if ChatGPT and Notion had a voice-powered child.

How we built it

Frontend: Developed using Bolt.new, a no-code/low-code builder for rapid prototyping. Styled like Notion but infused with interactivity and animations.
Auth & Database: Handled with Supabase, storing user roles, preferences, and chats.
AI Assistant: Integrated with OpenRouter (OpenAI-compatible) for natural language processing.
Voice capabilities: UI designed for future support of Whisper (STT) and ElevenLabs (TTS).
Role-specific Dashboards: Designed for adaptability with layouts for:
- Student (study planner, notes)
- HR (team tracker, announcements)
- Entrepreneur (pitches, vision board)
- Banker (financial reports, clients)
Landing Page: Built with modular sections — Home, Features, About, Pricing, Demo, Waitlist

Challenges we ran into

Bolt.new limitations: Couldn’t fully implement live AI memory or dynamic dashboards per role
Voice system: Mimicked functionality without full voice I/O due to time constraints
UI uniqueness: Creating something clean like Notion but interactive with AI felt like walking a tightrope
Prompt management: Building prompts that adapt based on role, tone, and task was tricky and ongoing

What we learned

Less is more: Focusing on experience over feature bloat helped us deliver a more unique feel
Voice-first interaction is the future. But it needs intentional design and emotional context to feel natural
No-code/low-code can go far — but clear prompts and modular architecture are the keys to making AI work well in SaaS platforms
Having a personality layer (NELO’s warm tone, coaching mode, etc.) truly matters in user adoption and emotional connection
