Inspiration
Having a mother who works in a Long-Term-Care Facility I routinely was privy to the challenges that are faced in such an environment. A major problem is communicating the general health of their residents. With so many PSWs and Nurses, and different shifts, it can be hard to get a big picture of how anyone resident has been doing. It can also get very difficult to communicate important health updates for a resident.
What it does
Neighbours-RMS is a resident management system that takes the daily checks and surveys they already perform and provides a higher-level view of any given resident. Providing regular feedback for areas such as mood, nutrition, activity, and hygiene. This data is recorded and amalgamated to provide a dashboard-level view of a resident. Such information would be helpful at a glance to know if a resident is meeting acceptable thresholds.
How we built it
Our initial plan was to build a web dashboard and mobile app as our team had two web developers and one mobile developer. We also decide to use AirTable as our data store to save time and make it so that any team member could interact with the data at the root in an easy way.
Challenges we ran into
We had a few challenges present themself over the course of the week, the first being that our team was operating in more than a couple of timezones, EST, CTS, and IST to be specific. This meant that communication at times could be difficult and it was hard to all be on the same page as things changed fast and often.
Another challenge was our collective inexperience interacting with APIs in a web environment. This made it so that while we were able to connect to Airtable we couldn't get views working as intended. So at that point, we pivoted into finalizing our designs in Figma to get the best possible prototype images that would convey our proposed solution.
Lastly, I think this is a common challenge is just a general lack of time. In our links, you'll see that we started down the path of coding out our solution, but had to pivot at a point to just sharing our vision in a more visual and less interactive way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our team because we ran into so many obstacles, but still kept going and in the end had something to submit.
What we learned
That there is a lot that we still need to learn, and how tough hackathons can be.
What's next for Neighbours-RMS
This was fun but it'll likely sit in a repo for now as a reminder of a great experience.
