Inspiration

Living in a suburban neighborhood, I noticed how disconnected we’d become—seniors struggling with errands, families needing moving help, neighbors with skills to share but no way to connect. I wanted to build something that brought us back to the core of community: looking out for one another.

What it does

Neighborhood Help Hub is a web platform where locals post/respond to help requests (errands, repairs, skill swaps), join community events, connect with verified neighbors, and discover trusted local businesses—all in one intuitive space.

How we built it

I started with wireframing core modules (Help Requests, Events, Trusted Network) in Figma, then built the frontend with React and TypeScript for scalability. TailwindCSS handled responsive design (mobile single-column, 768px+ two-column grid), and I curated realistic local data to populate all modules for a seamless user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing visual hierarchy was tough—ensuring urgent requests stood out (red accents) without clashing with Time Bank badges, and designing placeholder states for empty modules that felt warm, not generic. Also, making the sticky header functional across all screen sizes required iterative testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Crafting a cohesive color system (trust blue, community green) that feels welcoming, building fully responsive modules that work flawlessly on mobile/desktop, and creating a UI that prioritizes clarity—neighbors can find what they need in seconds.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of user-centric design—small details (like verified neighbor badges, numeric ratings) build trust. I also learned how to balance edge cases (empty states, dual-labeled requests) without compromising usability.

What's next for this project

Add user login to let locals submit their own help requests/events, integrate a real-time chat for neighbor communication, and build a backend to store RSVP/rating data. Long-term, I want to add a search feature to help users find specific help or services faster.
