Inspiration
Our community is very disconnected. Neighbors don't have the opportunity to meet each other anymore. Our team wanted to create a way to bring people together and create a sense of community. We knew a social-media-type app would be useful, but we wanted to make sure neighbors could both plan events and also keep the neighborhood safe.
What it does
Neighbornet is a social-media type web app that brings the community closer together through two types of posts: Events and Incidents. Events are your opportunity to learn about parties, fundraisers, or general information about construction or yard sales. On the other hand, incidents keep the community informed about natural disasters, abductions, crime, etc., to let neighbors know where the bad is happening, and how to help.
How we built it
We built the web app using NextJS and typescript. As well as this, we used Firebase to store information, and Mapbox to put our information on a world map to make it easier to visualize.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing server-side rendering with client modules.
- Using incremental static regeneration
- Working with poorly documented third-party packages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Fully emulated map with location data that works in real-time Real-time feed of events/incidents Strongly typed firebase client
What we learned
We learned to React from no knowledge to building a fully working web app. We learned about the power of working with a team versus on our own.
What's next for NeighborNet
We aim to add more features such as official government announcements, comments on posts, rsvp capabilities, and so much more. Finally, we soon hope to have our initial public release.
