Inspiration
Many communities face civic problems such as garbage accumulation, potholes, water leakage, and broken streetlights. Reporting these issues and tracking whether they are resolved can be difficult. We created Neighborly Street Pulse to make civic issue reporting more accessible, transparent, and organized.
What It Does
Neighborly Street Pulse allows citizens to report civic issues with descriptions, photos, and location details. Users can view reported incidents and track their status. Authorized administrators and resolvers can manage reported issues, update their status, and upload resolution photos to provide evidence of completed work.
How We Built It
We developed a web-based platform with a user-friendly interface for reporting and tracking incidents. The application includes incident management, photo uploads, and role-based access control to distinguish ordinary users from authorized administrators and resolvers. We used AI-assisted development tools to help build and refine the application.
Challenges We Faced
One of our main challenges was organizing incident information efficiently while ensuring proper access control. Implementing photo uploads for incident reports and restricting status updates to a single authorized administrator required careful consideration of permissions and data management. We also faced challenges during application testing, where we identified issues and refined the functionality to improve reliability and user experience.
What We Learned
We gained practical experience in web application development, database management, authentication, access control, and building solutions around real-world community problems. We also learned the importance of testing security rules instead of relying only on what the user interface displays.
Future Plans
We aim to improve location accuracy, add map-based incident visualization, introduce notifications for status changes, and explore analytics that help identify recurring civic problems. We also hope to make the platform more useful for communities and local authorities.
