Inspiration

Promoting responsibility has always been a top priority, especially for this Roblox track. However, simply telling people to do good deeds on Roblox just isn't the right method or market to do so on. I created a way for you, the player, to directly decide what to do in certain situations.

What it does

You spawn in a neighborhood. In front of you is a gas station. There are some.. questionable things going on. A robber and a homeless man in a brawl. A store which you could take stuff from. A rich man driving a hypercar asking for spare change. And.. watch out! Don't drive too fast in the neighborhood! This game promotes doing good deeds and being a responsible citizen. Do too many bad things, and there will be consequences!

How we built it

I built this using Roblox Studio and Luau for scripting. This involved dragging components/objects, adding scripts so that the player can interact with the NPCs and components.

Challenges we ran into

A big challenge was writing the script. Coding for game development is very different than traditional software development and requires you to consider how to make interactions between components/NPCs/players work. Everything is interconnected.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

When I gave a demo to other hackers and sponsors, there was this rendering bug where all the NPCs were naked because their pants and shirt weren't loading in. So... you got a bunch of naked people crowded at a gas station. That was definitely a highlight. But all in all I'm proud that I got a working prototype of a concept of doing good deeds in a Roblox game.

What we learned

I learned a lot about game development and how to work with physical components and the software side/scripting. Since I do data science for work, game development was definitely a different angle than what I'm used to and I really enjoyed learning a lot in this 36 hours.

What's next for Neighborhood Hero

Make things prettier. Add more complex features, NPC behavior/movement, expand the neighborhood activities, and give more options for the player to do good deeds!
