Inspiration
I was inspired by the idea of helping people in my community who need assistance with everyday tasks. I wanted to make it easier for neighbors to support one another while giving volunteers opportunities to make a difference and earn community service hours.
What it does
I created Neighborhood Helper to connect people who need help with local volunteers. Users can request assistance with tasks like grocery shopping, yard work, dog walking, and technology support. My goal is to build stronger communities through volunteering and neighbor-to-neighbor support.
How I built it
I built Neighborhood Helper as a web application using React and JavaScript. I designed the interface around requesting help, finding volunteer opportunities, and connecting users. I also explored Firebase for authentication and data storage to help my application manage users and requests.
Challenges I ran into
One challenge I faced was figuring out how to make the platform useful for both people requesting help and volunteers. I also had to consider user trust, privacy, and safety while planning features such as verification, messaging, and check-ins.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
I’m proud of creating a project that connects technology with a real community need. I believe Neighborhood Helper has the potential to make volunteering more accessible, help people find assistance, and encourage neighbors to support one another.
What I learned
I learned how to approach a real-world problem from a developer’s perspective, plan features around users’ needs, and use technologies like React and Firebase to support a web application. I also learned that building a useful product involves more than coding it requires thinking about accessibility, trust, and community impact.
What’s next for Neighborhood Helper
Next, I want to improve my platform, test it with potential users, and gather community feedback. I hope to strengthen volunteer verification and safety features, make matching people with volunteers easier, and work with local schools and community organizations to expand its impact.
