Inspiration

After looking at some popular social media apps such as Pinterest and Instagram, ,we thought it was a good idea to create a social media site dedicated for small businesses to promote their products. This encourages people to discover new items in their neighborhood and to shop local.

What it does

Neighbor’s Eco is a social media platform where businesses can create their own account and start posting their products on the website. Businesses have to first sign up then login.

How we built it

We first used Figma and Procreate to have a rough idea of what the website would look like. Furthermore, we drew some of the background image and the character to make the website more unique. Then we started coding in Javascript using React and tailwind to build the website from scratch.

Challenges we ran into

This hackathon set the opportunity for three of the team members to code for the first time in Javascript and React. The learning curve was very steep, and each time there was a component we didn't know how to code, we had to search online and test by trial and error to get the desired look or obtain the desired function. In particular, we had to figure out how to make the navbar sticky so when the user scrolls down, the navbar stays on top. In addition, putting a background image using Tailwind was more complicated than expected because it did not seem to be working the way we coded it. Finally, playing with the concept of flexbox was very hard to master, which resulted in the website not being responsive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to code for the first time in a new language and had to come up with a website in such a short span of time.

What we learned

We learned that there exists a tool called Tailwind that lets the programmer code more efficiently for the CSS part. Plus, we learned how to code in React and Javascript.

What's next for Neighbor's Eco

In this Hackathon, we focused mostly on the frontend part, such as building the look of the website. In the future, we would like to learn how to code for the backend part, such as collecting data of the businesses so they can post their pictures on the website and the backend will save the data in a database and play with the concept of API.
