Inspiration

Do you know the names of all of your neighbors? According to a study completed by the Pew Research Center, only 19% of adults in the United States are able to name all of their neighbors. In today’s highly technological world, our focus on our online presence often causes us to forget what is immediately around us. Thus, we were inspired to implement technology to remediate this issue with the intention of helping everyone in a neighborhood learn more about each other.

What it does

This app involves creating an account and signing in with a community-specific code through which members can interact with each other. Features include a forum for sharing questions about the local area, documents for both the village and home owners association, polls for voting on neighborhood-specific decisions, a social network for interacting with neighbors, and testimonials about the residency.

How I built it

We built the app using AppyPie and introduced a Google Firebase server so that multiple devices could use the app to share data.

Challenges I ran into

We ran into design-related challenges, as certain aspects of the app were difficult to customize since they had to comply with other formatting standards.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of the Forum feature, for its ease in allowing individuals to communicate within a neighborhood.

What I learned

We learned the intricacies of using an online server to community between groups of people, and explored more interactive UI with this project.

What's next for Neighbor.ly

We plan to expand Neighbor.ly’s capabilities by implementing a reward feature, which incentivizes participating in community service projects. Using a point-based system, each user can accumulate points by being active in their neighborhood and helping others out. The community that has the most points after the end of each month will earn special awards, such as tax cuts in the future.
