Inspiration

As society becomes globalized, more and more individuals and families immigrate to new places, whether it’s a new town, state, country, or continent. These moves, while usually helpful in obtaining improved opportunities and resources, can be daunting as they occur. Persons in a new region often find themselves isolated, directionless, and even discriminated upon. Our app aims to help new/immigrant persons more readily obtain and use resources to quickly feel at home and maximize their potential. This is achieved by 2 main features: a library of resources separated into 8 categories (food, schools, health, jobs, housing, childcare, shopping, and support) as well as a live community interaction platform.

How we built it

The Neighbor app was designed using Figma. We conceptualized the initial wireframe and developed the interactive app prototype using this website. The layout and functionalities of the personalized home page, extensive explore page, and live community page features were also entirely designed through Figma.

Challenges we ran into

While we didn’t struggle much with designing Neighbor, we found it slightly difficult to work together for an extended period of time as we each had other important meetings to attend. However, by coordinating our schedules and working diligently, we were able to successfully complete the proposal.

What we learned

Throughout the experience of designing Neighbor, we learned how to efficiently collaborate as a team and create a finished and polished prototype given the time limit of the hackathon; during this process, we were able to explore more advanced functions of Figma, furthering and improving the features of our app. We are proud of being able to transform an abstract idea into a concrete product that– if implemented– can benefit the lives of many individuals who experience uncertainty as they move to new areas.
