Inspiration
We realized in wake of COVID-19, many non-profit organizations are in dire need of supplies/donations to make sure they keep serving the communities they are a part of. We developed a Proof of Concept market place that will facilitate donations to organizations where it will make the most impact locally.
What it does
We decided to develop a marketplace where the organizations and donors can be matched. The app uses the data that is given by the donors and organizations both to calculate where the donation will make the greatest impact and shows the donors a list of organizations they can donate to.
How we built it
We developed this proof of concept on Android using Kotlin and realm as our backend. Thanks to Jimmy for UX/UI designs!
Challenges we ran into
At first we decided to allow contact both ways. Donors can reach out to organizations and organizations can reach out to donors but then we decided to nix the organization to donor contact due to the possibility that donors might get spammed.
We also had some trouble coming up with how to calculate the impact of donations. We settled on creating an algorithm based on how big the organization is (how much donation they need), and how close are they to meeting their goals.
What's next for NeedMatch
For the next steps, we would like to establish a vetting system for both organizations and donors to make sure we minimize the chances of abuse. We would also like to add more details to the types of supplies and add more options to what people can donate.
