Inspiration
I noticed that when people need something for a small or temporary task, the first solution is often to buy something new. This made us ask a simple question: what if we started with the goal instead of the product?
NeedLess was inspired by the idea that many everyday needs can be solved using resources that already exist. Instead of immediately recommending a new purchase, NeedLess explores whether the goal can be achieved by using, repairing, adapting, borrowing, renting, sharing, or choosing second-hand options.
Our goal is to make sustainable choices simple and practical for everyone, while reducing unnecessary consumption of finite resources.
What We Learned
“While developing NeedLess, I explored how AI can be used not just to recommend products, but to understand what a person is actually trying to accomplish and help them make a better resource-conscious decision.”
How We Built It
NeedLess is designed as a simple web-based AI decision tool. A user describes what they need to accomplish, and the system analyzes the goal and presents practical options in order of resource efficiency.
The decision flow prioritizes existing resources first, followed by repair or adaptation, borrowing, renting or sharing, second-hand or refurbished options, and finally a new purchase when necessary.
Challenges
One of my main challenges was turning a broad environmental problem into a simple experience that anyone could understand. I also wanted the AI recommendations to be practical and useful rather than giving generic sustainability advice.
