Inspiration
Need for Bits was inspired by the flaws in Web2 gaming — from creators earning pennies locked behind KYC walls to players losing progress when servers shut down. The frustration of digital rights violations and corporate control sparked our mission to build a game where players truly own their achievements and assets. Collect Bitcoins along the way and grow your chain to make it the longest while spending it to reap the rewards and upgrade your vehicle.
What it does
It’s a fully on-chain racing game built on Starknet, merging real-time gameplay with blockchain-backed ownership. Every race, move, and reward is verifiable on-chain, ensuring fairness, persistence, and true player control without requiring blockchain knowledge:contentReference.
How I built it
We built the game using Starknet as the blockchain layer, Cartridge for wallet abstraction and onboarding, and an on-chain provable engine that records game logic directly to the blockchain. Merkle inclusion proofs were implemented to create inclusivity for NFT holders and enable verifiable digital assets:contentReference.
Challenges I ran into
Creating a non-turn-based, real-time fully on-chain game was a major challenge. We had to overcome the limitations of blockchain throughput and transaction latency while preserving the racing experience. Balancing scalability, gas efficiency, and deterministic logic required heavy optimization and creative engineering:contentReference.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We successfully built a fully on-chain real-time racing system with zero blockchain knowledge required for users. The project also integrates NFT-based access and tournaments, showcasing how blockchain can power transparent, inclusive, and scalable gaming ecosystems.
What I learned
We learned that on-chain gaming is about more than decentralization — it’s about building trust and permanence into player experiences. It taught us how to merge high-speed gameplay with cryptographic proofs and design for both gamers and developers.
What's next for Need for Bits
Next, we’re launching regional tournaments and expanding partnerships across Starknet communities. Our roadmap includes integrating social leaderboards, expanding NFT ecosystems, and scaling to mobile platforms to make on-chain racing accessible to everyone.
