Inspiration

In a world dominated by short-form videos and infinite scrolling feeds, many of us spend hours consuming passive, low-engagement content. I built Nebuku to combat doomscrolling and turn idle screen time into active, mind-expanding brain exercise.

While classic puzzle games like Sudoku are fantastic for cognitive training, standard digital Sudoku apps are rigid—they only tell you if a number is right or wrong, encouraging trial-and-error guessing rather than true logical deduction. I wanted to build a digital detox platform that pairs a modern, beautiful aesthetic with an intelligent AI tutor that actually teaches you how to think, deduce, and solve problems step-by-step.

What it does

Nebuku is an Apple Liquid Glass-styled educational logic platform that transforms standard Sudoku into an interactive Socratic learning experience:

  • Socratic AI Logic Coach: Powered by Gemini Flash, the built-in tutor analyzes your current 9 times 9 board state. Instead of spoiling the puzzle by revealing digits, it asks guiding questions and explains core deductive techniques (such as Naked Singles, Hidden Pairs, and Intersection Removal).
  • Step-by-Step Educational Breakdown: The "Explain Solution Logic" mode breaks down the remaining empty cells into a written, algorithmic logical deduction path so players can study the reasoning behind complex moves.
  • Adaptive ELO & Skill Calibration: Features an adaptive Matchmaking Rating (MMR) system calibrated from Novice to Grandmaster that dynamically adjusts puzzle difficulty based on player performance.
  • Nebuku Polymath: An integrated curiosity lounge where players can learn bite-sized educational facts across World History, Quantum Physics, and Mathematical Foundations.

How I built it

  • Frontend UI & Styling: Built using React and Tailwind CSS with custom glassmorphic styling, translucent backdrop blurs, and responsive mobile-first touch controls.
  • Backend Runtime & API: Powered by a Node.js server runtime hosted on Google Cloud Run.
  • AI Logic Integration: Integrated with Google AI Studio and the Gemini Flash API for real-time board analysis, Socratic prompt generation, and streaming educational hints.
  • Mathematical Grid Engine: Implemented a pure TypeScript Sudoku engine for deterministic candidate tracking across 9 times 9 grids (81 cells, divided into nine 3 times 3 sub-grids) to calculate board entropy in real time.

Challenges I ran into

  • Socratic Prompt Engineering: Getting the AI to reliably evaluate a 9 times 9 matrix without accidentally leaking the exact digit required extensive prompt tuning. We had to condition Gemini to return coordinate-level highlights and pedagogical nudges instead of raw answers.
  • Cloud Run Deployment & Module Bundling: Resolving ESM pathing and Node module resolution issues during containerization was tricky, requiring tailored Vite and production server configurations to ensure zero downtime.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

  • Zero-Spoiler AI Assistance: Successfully creating an AI coach that teaches complex logical techniques rather than acting as a simple shortcut tool.
  • Seamless Glassmorphic Design: Delivering an Apple Liquid Glass visual experience that feels fluid, tactile, and enjoyable to use.
  • End-to-End Execution: Designing, debugging, and deploying a full-stack educational app completely on Cloud Run within the hackathon timeframe.

What I learned

  • How to leverage Gemini Flash for low-latency, real-time structured Socratic feedback.
  • How to design user-facing adaptive rating systems to balance challenge and skill development.
  • How to transform a simple game concept into a problem-solving educational platform under the AI + Education umbrella.

What's next for Nebuku

  • Expanded Mathematical Logic Modules: Introduce non-traditional Sudoku variants (such as Killer Sudoku or 16 times 16 grids) with tailored Socratic explanations.
  • Multiplayer Socratic Duels: Allow users to compete in real-time speed solving while receiving dynamic AI coaching mid-match.
  • Offline PWA Support: Add Progressive Web App (PWA) caching so users can replace doomscrolling on flights or commutes without needing an active internet connection.
