Inspiration

The idea of near to door came to me when one day i was walking home and an old neighbour of mine also walked with me . she mentioned that she had just gone to the market and got all things at once as she was not sure of when she would find someone to take her to market to get stuff. so i basically came to the realisation that people who are old or dont have access to transport and stay in remote villages are actually suffering

What it does

Near2Door-Tech-Wizards is a hyperlocal e-commerce platform designed for tier-2 and tier-3 regions like Goa, India. Its core purpose is to connect local shops, customers, and delivery agents. The platform solves key problems by:

  • Increasing Local Shop Visibility: It provides a digital storefront for small shops, thereby increasing their sales and visibility.
  • Ensuring Efficient Local Delivery: It connects local delivery agents to provide fast and reliable delivery within neighborhoods, helping to reduce wait times. This community-driven model makes delivery accessible even in remote and village areas where large aggregators cannot deliver.
  • Providing Customer Convenience: Customers can browse nearby shops, compare products, and place orders quickly from a single platform. The service is particularly helpful for elderly and disabled individuals, as well as busy students and working professionals who require assistance with shopping.

The platform offers several key features for its four segments (Customers, Shop Owners, Delivery Agents, and Admins):

  • User Authentication (for customer, shop, agent, or admin roles).
  • Shop Management tools for adding/editing products and updating profiles.
  • Order Management and status tracking.
  • Delivery Tracking via live map for both agents and customers.
  • Smart Fraud Prevention which uses a working balance system for delivery agents to ensure secure transactions.
  • Flexible Payment Options including Cash-on-Delivery (COD), UPI (GPay/Paytm), and wallet-based payments.

How we built it

The Near2Door-Tech-Wizards implementation uses a modern full-stack approach available in the GitHub repository:

  • Architecture: The project structure separates the frontend and backend.
  • Backend: The API is built using Flask, a Python framework, and runs at http://127.0.0.1:5000.
  • Frontend: The user interface is developed using React via Vite and runs on the development server at http://localhost:5173.
  • Languages: The codebase is predominantly JavaScript (88.5%) and Python (11.3%).
  • Initial MVP: Crucially, the initial Minimum Viable Product (MVP) was constructed using no-code platforms like Google Sites + Forms + Sheets.
  • Documentation: Setup and troubleshooting guides are provided in instructions.md, and endpoint details are in API_CONTRACT.md.
  • Development Status: The repository shows development across 29 Commits by two listed contributors.

Challenges we ran into

During the execution of the project, the team faced several challenges inherent to operating in tier-2/3 regions and with small businesses:

  • Unreliable Status Updates: Ensuring reliable status updates regarding shop and agent availability proved difficult. Solution: This was addressed by implementing a daily reminder system and using sheets filtered by time.
  • Cash Misuse: There was a risk of agents misusing cash collected from customers. Solution: The working balance system was established, where the amount is deducted from the agent's balance upon complaint validation to ensure safety and trust.
  • Low Technical Familiarity: Many local users, especially the elderly or small shopkeepers, have low tech familiarity and would struggle with complex applications. Solution: This was overcome by integrating Google Forms and WhatsApp for order placement and support, allowing for potential voice support.
  • Lack of a Dedicated App: Initially, the platform lacked a dedicated application. Solution: An MVP was successfully deployed using Glide or Sites + Forms while funding was secured for full app development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The project achieved several significant milestones and incorporated unique value propositions:

  • Ultra-Low Cost Model: We created a model that is vastly more affordable for small businesses than national aggregators (which charge 20–25% commission plus GST). Near2Door charges only ₹500/month after the first free trial month.
  • Reaching Underserved Communities: The platform successfully established a community-driven model that can reach remote and village areas that national giants cannot service.
  • Smart Fraud Prevention System: We implemented a robust fraud protection mechanism utilizing a delivery agent working balance that secures transactions and allows customers to report fraud within 30 minutes.
  • Financial Projections and Stability: We projected a strong Year 1 revenue of ₹5.8 Crores and aim to break even in 3–4 months.
  • Local Employment Empowerment: The platform provides earning opportunities and supports local employment, specifically empowering young individuals aged 14+ in their locality.
  • Core Functionality Delivered: The underlying technical implementation, including the Flask API and React/Vite frontend, successfully delivers core features like User Authentication, Delivery Tracking, and Shop Management.

What we learned

Based on the development and strategy, key lessons include:

  • The necessity of simplicity: To serve non-tech-savvy users and shops in tier-2/3 regions, initial reliance on simple, familiar tools like WhatsApp and Google Forms was crucial for onboarding and operations.
  • Financial Trust is paramount: The implementation of the working balance system was essential to mitigating risks of cash misuse and building secure and verified transactions between customers and agents.
  • Flexible payments drive adoption: Offering multiple flexible payment options, including Cash-on-Delivery, UPI, and wallets, is necessary to meet diverse customer preferences in the local market.
  • Community focus minimizes costs: The ability to operate with no infrastructure cost (no warehouses or dark stores) demonstrates that a local-first, community-driven approach is viable and highly effective.

What's next for Near2Door

The project has a clear execution schedule with short-term and long-term goals:

  • Immediate Next Steps (Preparation):
    • App Development: Develop and test the MVP app, incorporating fraud prevention and multiple payment modes.
    • Onboarding Shops: Partner with grocery and general stores to onboard 100+ shops, utilizing the introductory rate of ₹500/month.
    • Agent Recruitment: Recruit and train delivery agents (youth aged 14+) with the working balance system.
    • Marketing & Incentives: Launch marketing campaigns via social media and local ads, including the implementation of Peer Referral Rewards (customers earn 2% of their peer’s first spend).
  • Initial Operations & Expansion:
    • Go Live in 5 key cities in Goa: Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa, and Ponda.
    • Achieve short-term targets of 500 customers and 50+ daily orders.
  • Future Growth:
    • Funding: Optimize operations and seek ₹50L–₹1Cr investment.
    • Long-Term Goal: Achieve All-Goa coverage, aiming for 500+ shops and 5,000+ active users.
