Inspiration
Greenhouse gases: Every year, food waste generates more than 38 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, which contribute significantly to the Climate change Contribute. Worldwide: Around 1.3 billion tons of the world's food ends up in the trash every year. Germany: In Germany alone, around 12 million tons of food are wasted every year. Per capita: On average, we Germans throw around 75 kilograms of our food in the trash can!
What it does
It is a simple search interface and notification system, for products which are near-expiry date and can be bought at a discounted price, thus reducing food waste by maximizing efficient food consumption.
How we built it
Simple web app built on React.JS and leveraging firebase products for authentication, storage and data managment.
Challenges we ran into
Getting and sending SMS notifications through twilio when a product with a near-expiry date is uploaded in the platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a MVP that is bug-free ( most of it )
What we learned
We learned how to collaborate as a team using distributed software managment tool, in this case git.
What's next for Near-expiry Notification App
- Ability to actually search for discounted products
- Feature of comparing products with near-expiry date from different vendors
- Scraping and connecting to supermarkets online-shops and APIs.
