Inspiration

We were inspired by the increasing frequency of natural disasters and the lack of tools that not only warn users but also help them understand and prepare. Most weather platforms stop at reporting events—we wanted to build one that informs, analyzes, and protects communities, especially in vulnerable regions like Texas.

What it does

Nature Calls is a web-based platform that delivers real-time alerts and insights on natural disasters. One of our core features is an interactive map that displays recent earthquakes across Texas using real-world data. Users can hover over markers to view details such as magnitude, location, and time. Beyond alerts, our platform uses AI predictions to analyze disaster trends to see when and where it'll happen next.

How we built it

We built Nature Calls using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSON as our core foundation, with Tailwind CSS for a clean and responsive UI. We integrated APIs to collect global data on natural disasters, with a particular focus on events affecting Texas. For advanced analysis, we implemented AI using Python, powered by both supervised and unsupervised learning techniques: Unsupervised Learning – Used to uncover hidden patterns and clusters in disaster data without labeled outcomes. This helps us identify emerging risk zones or unusual event groupings. Supervised Learning – Trained on past, labeled events to make predictions about future disasters, such as potential severity or frequency.

Challenges we ran into

Since most of us were new and inexperienced with hackathons, we were initially slow in both developing our idea and adapting to the fast-paced environment. Learning new tools and programming languages on the fly—while trying to integrate real-time data, build an interactive map, and implement AI—presented a major challenge. Balancing accuracy, usability, and performance pushed us to grow quickly as a team under pressure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we not only learned new languages and technical skills that can be applied to real-world applications, but also worked together as a team to bring our vision to life within a limited timeframe. This hackathon challenged us to grow quickly, communicate effectively, and step outside our comfort zones. Through effort, hard work, and collaboration, we transformed an idea into a functioning project—one we are genuinely proud to present.

What we learned

We learned how to work with new languages and technologies, stepping into unfamiliar territory with confidence. Collaborating as a team taught us the value of communication, trust, and dividing responsibilities effectively. Most importantly, we discovered how to turn challenges into opportunities—adapting quickly, solving problems under pressure, and committing to a shared goal despite time constraints.

What's next for Nature Calls

We plan to expand predictive modeling, add multilingual support, and launch offline emergency guides. Future updates will include evacuation routes, shelter directories, and community-based alerts—transforming Nature Calls into a complete safety and preparedness ecosystem.
