Inspiration
I frequently utilise browser translation features in my daily work, as I need to review a substantial volume of English articles and messages. However, my command of English is rather limited. I've tried using translation plugins developed by others, but they either proved sluggish or required payment, rendering them impractical for extensive use. Consequently, I developed this translation plugin myself. To achieve true freedom in translation.
What it does
- Full-page translation: Translates entire web pages while preserving original layout
- Hover-to-translate: Hold modifier key (Alt/Control/Shift) and hover over text for instant translation
- Input field translation: Type three spaces in any input field to translate your content
- Side panel translator: Free-form text translation with real-time results
- EPUB file translation: Upload and translate EPUB books with progress tracking
How we built it
The first MVP version came together rather quickly, as I frequently used the paragraph translation feature myself, so I was able to complete it swiftly. Later, a colleague spotted my plugin and asked what it was. I explained it to him, and he became quite interested, suggesting numerous additional requirements. Since then, I've kept updating it. I rather enjoy that feeling of helping others.
Challenges we ran into
Along the way, I encountered numerous difficulties. At times, the code failed to execute as intended, the logic proved unclear, and the UI lacked simplicity. With the assistance of Gemini CLI, these challenges were gradually overcome. I must express my gratitude to Gemini CLI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In other communities, I introduced my translation extension, and everyone expressed great interest in this free, efficient, and privacy-focused tool. They mentioned it had been immensely helpful, with some even stating they switched back to Chrome from other browsers because of my extension. Being able to assist them brings me immense satisfaction – something money simply cannot measure. I sincerely hope I can continue doing this indefinitely.
What we learned
My experience is this: when you encounter a good idea, do not hesitate, do not get bogged down in excessive deliberation. Take immediate action and build an MVP version straight away. Overthinking will only render the whole endeavour impossible. There's a saying: "Learn by doing" – meaning learn through practice. I find this very true.
What's next for Native Translate — Private, Built-in AI Translation
I shall continue to maintain it, as it is an open-source project. I hope it may assist others with translation and also aid in learning code programming. Keep up the good work.
