Inspiration
A common problem many of us face is worrying about missing a train or bus stop. This is why we created an application that would notify our users when they are arriving to their train/bus transportation.
How it works
Users are immediately directed to the home screen where they can look at a map of the cal train stations in their area and choose the station that they are planning to arrive at. When they are in a certain radius of that station (2/3 minutes before it arrives) the phone both rings and vibrates to notify the user that he or she should get ready to get off.
Challenges I ran into
Integrating everyone's work together, Google maps API integration issues, moving current location on demand for demo purposes, communicating from Map to other activities
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Integrating vibrations and sounds to notify the user.
Using GoogleMapsAPI to put the stations from CalTrain
Working around the fact that we cannot change our current location
Notifying the user before he or she reaches the station
What I learned
We learned how to use the Google Maps API, to use sound/vibrator features on the phone, we became more comfortable designing intuitive User Interface
What's next for Napp
We hope to expand our application for all the stations on Caltrain as well as other public transportation services (VTA, Bart, etc.) Additionally, we would like to allow users to define their radius in whatever units they are comfortable with (km, m, mi., ft., etc.) We would like to save common locations for each user. We would like to integrate Yelp to allow users to search for nearby restaurants when they arrive at stations. We would like to expand our application to iOS.
