Inspiration
As someone for whom English is a second language, I have always found it better to learn English while actively interacting with it in the real world, not just some grammar books or audio files. For example, watching movies, hearing commercial taglines, etc.
That's the baseline for this whole project. I want to facilitate people learning about sentences they hear in the real world and learning about it in a fun way.
For example, let's say you're an ESL learner, and you hear McDonalds' tagline "I'm lovin' it!" like you have a million times. Only this time, you'd really like to break down that sentence and learn about its base components and why it's structured that way. Napoleon can help you with just that.
What it does
Going back to the McDonalds' example, you continue by entering that tagline into Napoleon. After a few seconds, Napoleon will break down that sentence for you and generate grammatical concepts which explain how that tagline is structured. Here are the information blocks Napoleon will provide you:
- Parts of Speech A very fundamental concept in English grammar. Napoleon will identify each word and categorize it in the proper part of speech while explaining what that particular part of speech is and what it does.
- Sentence Structure Details and explanation of the sentence's sentence structure and what each part is (subject, object, predicate, etc.).
- Active/Passive Voices Another fundamental concepts usually taught in English classes.
- Tense Napoleon will identify which tense the given sentence has and explain its reasons.
- Question To help practice for learners and also seal in the knowledge from the previous widgets, Napoleon will form questions based on the input. -Word of the Day As a fun bonus, Napoleon will also generate word of the day with the sentence input as the seed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is something I often envisioned while learning the basics of English back then. So happy to be able to make a form of it.
