Inspiration

Over 1.4 billion adults worldwide remain unbanked — not because they're untrustworthy, but because traditional credit systems require collateral and documentation they don't have. Merchants in emerging markets extend informal credit daily with a handshake. We asked: can a blockchain protocol do the same, at $0.25–$25 scale, with cryptographic guarantees instead of paperwork?

What it does

NanoCredit is a blockchain-based nano-lending protocol for unbanked populations in emerging markets. Borrowers receive $0.25–$25 microloans from local merchants — repayable within 30 days — with no bank account, no KYC documents, and no collateral required.

Live Philippines pilot (Q3 2025): 3 merchants, $12,000+ disbursed, 94% repayment rate on World Chain mainnet.

Identity is handled by Worldcoin iris scan (Sybil resistance) — one human, one account, no bots. The protocol runs as a World Mini App, making it accessible directly from the World App without additional downloads.

How we built it

  • Smart contracts: EVM/Solidity on World Chain (Ethereum L2), USDC settlement
  • Identity layer: World ID (Worldcoin iris scan) for Sybil resistance — prevents one person from creating multiple borrower accounts
  • Frontend: World Mini App — accessible inside the World App
  • Credit scoring: On-chain tiered credit levels (Starter → Bronze → Silver → Gold) based on repayment history
  • Anti-fraud: BLE proximity verification proves borrower and merchant are physically co-located at point of transaction

Challenges we ran into

Designing a credit system that's both permissionless and resistant to Sybil attacks without requiring KYC. World ID solved the uniqueness problem elegantly — one iris scan = one borrower identity, usable across all merchants on the protocol.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • $12,000+ disbursed to real users on mainnet with 94% repayment rate
  • Zero KYC, zero collateral — purely reputation-based on-chain credit scoring
  • Sub-$0.01 transaction costs on World Chain make loans as small as $0.25 economically viable

What we learned

Repayment behavior is surprisingly strong when loans are small and tied to a merchant relationship. The social accountability of a known merchant is a more powerful repayment incentive than legal enforcement.

What's next for NanoCredit

Expanding to Argentina (crypto-friendly regulatory environment, active Worldcoin Orb infrastructure). Evaluating Humanity Protocol palm scanning as an additional identity layer. Targeting $200K–$500K funding round to fund the Argentina pilot.
