Inspiration
We learned there was a need for structure for NAMI’s volunteer scheduling and tracker. To address this we came up with the volunteer management system. Additionally, we believed this solution would be challenging, but doable with our current skill set.
What it does
-Help NAMI structure their volunteering and organize its process of accepting new volunteers. By having features such as a calendar and volunteer tracker. -The calendar allows coordinators to decide which volunteers will be helping at the events. -The tracker is designed to help volunteers keep track of their application process. Lastly, volunteers are allowed to set their availability.
How we built it
We used Figma as an outline of how our webApp would look. Additionally, we did some front-end engineering to add some functionality to our project.
Challenges we ran into
Some initial challenges we ran into was figuring out when and how to start our project. Since this was all of our first hackathon, we didn’t know what to expect. However, we tried our best to preserve with the skills and tools we had. We had to learn Git & GitHub, Figma, Firebase, and React in only 24 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re really proud of how our front-end turned out, given we had trouble using it at first, but with time we were able to create a project we are proud of. Additionally, we’re proud of the effort and dedication we put into this project.
What we learned
Some of our members learned React and discovered their love/hate for Figma. Overall, we all went outside our comfort zones to try a new tool.
What's next for NAMI Yolo Portal
- The volunteer portal, which would show progress in recruitment, onboarding, training, and also let volunteers register for events.
- Feedback form for coordinators to provide helpful tips to volunteers.
- Add additional features to the calendar: such as the name of the host that is hosting the event, exporting to the google calendar, and being synced across volunteer and program coordinators.
