How can educators in an under-resourced school make valuable lessons usable by students with drastically different needs?

Inequity in present society limits individuals’ ability to acquire knowledge in equal ways, where accessibility concerns and barriers can stack and become stagnant limitations. In many rural and under-resourced communities, learners rely primarily on local teachers and volunteers who may travel to these areas to support students. These educators often have limited time, teaching resources, internet access, and knowledge of individual learners’ needs, making it difficult to find appropriate materials and adapt them for different abilities, languages, or accessibility requirements.

Educational materials are usually designed for the default learner. Students with different sensory, cognitive, or language needs may therefore receive the same material without having equal access to it. Therefore, we aim to bridge the accessibility gap in under-resourced education by helping educators adapt existing learning materials to the diverse needs of their students, helping ensure that no learner is excluded by a one-size-fits-all approach to education.

Our project will therefore aim to create a resource-aware platform that helps educators quickly discover, adapt, and prepare suitable teaching materials based on both learner needs and resources available in the classroom. This creates opportunities for a better learning environment and feasibility for a wider community of educators and volunteers.
