NALAM – AI-Powered Healthcare Safety & Patient-Rights Assistant
- What inspired you to build this project? Healthcare can be confusing when people are unsure whether a health concern needs basic care, a doctor’s attention, or urgent medical help. We wanted to explore how AI could provide a safe first level of guidance without replacing healthcare professionals. This inspired us to build NALAM, focusing on healthcare safety, accessibility, patient rights, and responsible AI.
- What does NALAM do? NALAM allows users to describe their health concerns through text or voice and provides action-oriented guidance based on predefined safety rules. -> Routine concern → Basic self-care and monitoring -> Medical attention needed → Consult a healthcare professional
- >Potentially serious → Urgent or emergency-care guidance NALAM does not claim to provide a confirmed diagnosis or prescribe medication. It focuses on helping users understand the appropriate next step. It also provides simple, general information about patient rights, consent, healthcare privacy, and personal health-data awareness.
- How did you build it? We designed NALAM as a user-friendly, multilingual web application with a safety-first workflow: User → Voice/Text Input → Safety Analysis → Risk Level → Guidance → Professional/Emergency Escalation The system combines AI-assisted interaction with predefined safety rules to reduce unsafe or overconfident responses. Our design focuses on: -> Multilingual accessibility
- >Voice and text interaction
- >Safety-based responses
- >Clear escalation mechanisms
- >Patient-rights awareness
- >Privacy-conscious handling of sensitive information
- What challenges did you run into? The biggest challenge was deciding how much responsibility AI should have in a healthcare situation. We had to ensure that NALAM would not create false confidence or encourage users to depend on AI instead of professionals. Other challenges included: -> Designing safe responses for potentially serious symptoms
- >Connecting healthcare with the AI + Law theme
- >Making legal and healthcare information easy to understand
- >Supporting multilingual and voice-based interaction
- >Balancing simplicity with safety
- What accomplishments are you most proud of? We are proud of turning a healthcare idea into a safety-focused AI prototype that goes beyond a traditional chatbot. Our key achievement is bringing together: AI + Healthcare Safety + Patient Rights + Digital Privacy + Accessibility Most importantly, we designed NALAM with the principle that AI should guide people toward the right help, not replace the professionals responsible for their care.
- What did you learn? Building NALAM taught us that healthcare AI requires much more than simply generating answers. We learned the importance of: -> Responsible AI design
- >Human-in-the-loop decision making
- >Safety-first response systems
- >Clear escalation pathways
- >Protecting sensitive information
- >Avoiding unsupported diagnosis and prescriptions
- >Making complex healthcare and legal concepts understandable We also learned that AI + Law can be used to improve public awareness of rights and responsibilities, not only for legal-document analysis.
- What’s next for NALAM? Our next goal is to make NALAM more reliable, accessible, and useful in real-world settings. Future improvements include: -> Region-specific healthcare and legal information
- >Verified healthcare and legal resources
- >Stronger multilingual support
- >Improved accessibility features
- >Better voice interaction
- >Integration with authorized healthcare and emergency services Our long-term vision is to build a bridge between: People → AI Safety → Healthcare Services → Patient Rights NALAM aims to make the first step toward appropriate healthcare support safer, simpler, and more understandable.
