Inspiration

Solid waste management is one of the environmental challenges faced by urban and rural dwellers in Nigeria. More than 32 million tons of solid wastes are produced annually out of which less than 30% is collected by relevant agencies. The remaining 70% remain uncollected thereby causing environmental pollution. The reason why this large percentage are uncollected, are due to poor waste management service which sole aim is to collect, gather, manage and make sure that wastes are properly collected and distributed to recycling and manufacturing companies. So, we came up with NaijaRecyclers, a solution that offers an efficient office and household waste management service.

What it does

NaijaRecyclers is a platform that basically, connects households who have wastes to recycling/manufacturing companies. The platform offer an efficient office and household recycling service. The idea, is to bridge the gap on how wastes are collected, managed and properly sold to recycling companies.

How we built it

The solution was built making best use of technology that would guarantee best users' experience and satisfaction. The web application was designed using ReactJS, Express and Node. Mockups and logos for the project were designed using Corel draw, Photoshop and Adobe XD. Some devices components (e.g geolocation) were explored (on request, of course) to further promote usability and user's experience. Authentication was used, when a user logs in to his/her account, It will take them to their dashboard, where they will determine if they have waste to dispose or waste to dispatch

Challenges we ran into

  1. Sending works to team members on GitHub
  2. Hosting, linode and .xyz not working.
  3. Coming up with a user interface that will be properly understood and engaged by our target audience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Streamlining our idea into a working solution that'd be viable and sustainable.

What we learned

Team work win trophies. Nobody is an island; there tend to be a better output when individuals come together, to brainstorm, and transform ideas into a working solution.

What's next for NaijaRecyclers

NaijaRecyclers will go a long way in tackling wastes and waste management problems in our society. We plan to turn the idea, into actions.

More than 32 million tons of solid waste annually out of which less than 30% is collected by relevant agencies. This accounts for $8 billion – about 35% of the country’s 2018 budget, while Lagos accounts for 10,000 tons of solid waste daily, which translates to a value chain of about $2 billion per year in Lagos alone. The problems due to inefficient waste management is due to the following: Inadequate environmental policies and legislation for solid waste collection Inadequate facilities for solid waste management (management deficiencies) Responsible for a number of communal diseases (Serious environmental impact) Collection efficiency of the existing solid waste management system is very low Development authorities are not able to offer analogous type of solid waste management system for different communities, due to diverse lifestyles in communities. Solution We are developing a platform that offer an efficient office and household recycling service. Collected wastes are later processed to our collection Hubs and therefore sold to manufacturing/recycling companies who make use of these raw materials for the production of a variety of items.
