Witnessing firsthand the immense effort and vital importance of subsistence farming, and the challenges of resource unpredictability, drove home the global necessity for precision agriculture. In regions where every kilogram of crop yield directly impacts a family’s livelihood, resource efficiency isn't just about profit—it's about survival and sustainability.

💡 The Problem We Are Solving Improper nitrogen (N) fertilizer application is a massive global issue. Over-application leads to expensive waste, harmful runoff that pollutes local watersheds, and the emission of potent greenhouse gases. Under-application leads to stunted growth and lost yields. Traditional, uniform application methods simply fail to account for the highly variable needs within a single field.

🛠️ How We Built It N-Sense is built on a few key technologies:

Satellite Imagery Integration: We pull recent, high-resolution satellite data (specifically utilizing NDVI/EVI indices) to assess current crop health and nutrient status across the field.

AI/Machine Learning Model: This model is trained on historical yield data, soil type inputs, and local weather patterns to predict the Economic Optimum Nitrogen Rate (EONR).

Zonal Mapping: The system segments the farmer's field into smaller, distinct zones and provides an optimized, variable N recommendation for each one.

Mobile-First Interface: We developed a simple interface allowing farmers to view the recommendations and download prescription maps compatible with modern variable-rate fertilizer application equipment.

🧠 What We Learned & Challenges Our biggest challenge was data accessibility and model optimization. Finding reliable, high-frequency satellite data that could be processed quickly enough for real-time application was difficult.
