Inspiration

Apps like Beli have changed how people track food, but they work after the fact: you visit a place, then rank and review it. We noticed a gap in the market. Nothing takes what it knows about you, like your tastes, your dietary needs, and where you’ve been, and uses it to plan your next stop. Whisked is built for that moment, when you’re hungry, or already full and wanting dessert, and don’t want to scroll through reviews to decide.

What it does

Whisked is a food discovery app that learns what you like and plans around you. It focuses on discovery, decision-making, and personalization.

Personalized restaurant search: finds places that fit your preferences instead of showing everyone the same list.

What’s next nearby: locates other spots close to where you are. For example, it can find a dessert place right after a meal.

Digital punch cards: unlocked once you’ve visited 4 different spots.

How we built it

We split the work between design and frontend on one side and backend on the other. Two of us designed Whisked in Figma and then built it as the frontend. The backend is a Python API with a SQLite database that tracks users, businesses, visits, and drinks. For recommendations, we used the Gemini API, which picks a nearby spot that matches your current cravings. We deployed the backend on Render and audited our AI with VEYZL.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting the front end and back end was our biggest challenge. Our team was split between front-end designers and engineers and back-end engineers, so we had to coordinate closely to make sure both sides worked together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we learned how to integrate Gemini API keys into our project, which was new to us. We’re also proud of turning a Figma design into a working app within the hackathon’s time limit.

What we learned

We practiced integrating Figma into our workflow and handing designs off to engineers, including how to document screens, states, and details so the build matches the design. We also learned how to work across front-end and back-end roles on a tight timeline.

What's next for Whisked

Tracking and navigation: guiding users to their next stop. Navigation apps already cover directions, so our version would tie navigation to personalization. Transportation options: letting users pick how they’re getting around (walking, driving, transit) and adjusting the route and nearby suggestions to match.
