Inspiration
The 2024 Finance Bill in Kenya revealed a massive "Density Gap": while legislation affects the youth the most, it is written in a language (Legalese) designed to exclude them. We were inspired to build a bridge between dense government gazettes and the digital-native generation, turning a "boring" civic duty into a high-stakes tactical advantage.
What it does
Mzalendo Lens is an AI-powered civic educator. Users upload PDFs or photos of legislative documents, and the app uses Gemini 3 Flash to:
Decode the Vibe: Provides a 1-sentence summary and a detailed, relatable breakdown.
Reality Check: Generates "Impact Cards" showing how the law hits your pocket (e.g., M-Pesa fees, Roysambu rent).
The Arena: A gamified quiz that tests your mastery of the bill to ensure you’re truly informed.
How we built it
The app is built on a modern, high-performance stack:
Frontend: React with Tailwind CSS for a "Neo-Brutalist" aesthetic that resonates with Gen-Z.
AI Engine: Gemini 3 Flash for ultra-fast multimodal processing of PDFs and physical scans.
Contextual Logic: Custom system instructions that transform dry legal text into localized Kenyan context (using examples like Shell/Rubis fuel or 1kg of sugar).
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge was the Accuracy vs. Vibe trade-off. We had to ensure that while the tone was casual and witty, the legal facts remained 100% accurate. We solved this through rigorous prompt engineering, instructing the model to treat legislative text as "Source Truth" while only allowing creative "Translation" for the persona.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a Multimodal Pipeline that can take a grainy photo of a physical government notice and turn it into a structured, interactive quiz in under 5 seconds. Making law feel like a "Level Up" in a game is something we are incredibly proud of.
What we learned
Civic literacy is a mathematical challenge. We observed that if the complexity of a bill exceeds a citizen's available time and legal literacy, participation drops to zero:
By using Gemini to drastically reduce , we effectively increase the probability of an informed and active citizenry.
What's next for Mzalendo Lens
I plan to integrate Gemini 2.5 Flash TTS to provide "Civic Podcasts" (multi-speaker summaries) for commuters. I also want to use Veo to generate 15-second "Reels" summarizing bills for even faster consumption on social media. Knowledge is a shield, and we’re just getting started on the forge.
